Cast Iron

Remarkable…

I press my fingers to the glass, thin lines like lightning strikes marring its surface. Yet somehow every precious, jagged piece remains locked in the hand mirror’s thick metallic frame. I lift it up, admiring my splintered reflection.

I scrutinize the scarf of bruises around my neck, the fingerprints identical to those smudged on the mirror. Wiping them away, I angle the antique over my shoulder appraisingly.

Perhaps I hadn’t swung hard enough.

Observing no movement, I lower it, smiling with satisfaction.

No, my ancestors valued craftsmanship.

I trail mascara down my cheeks before leading police to the body.
